Because a chicken didnt lay it. Some weird almost chicken creature (that isnt a chicken) layed an egg and then the weird almost chicken creature’s baby slightly mutated to push past the line between not chicken and chicken (just my guess). There were probably also many creatures before chickens existed that layed eggs, meaning that eggs 100% came first no matter what way you look at it.

Nah it’s actually just that red junglefowls evolved to breed based on the food available, so every bamboo explosion there was a junglefowl explosion. Then someone came along, ohserving the pattern and thought “Hey, instead of waiting months for crops to grow, why not stuff birds with food so we can eat their eggs?” And there came the first chicken.
If you meant the evolutionary line,

If you mean how eggs evolved, shortly after Choanoflagellates evolved they needed better ways of seeding their cells so instead of making copies of themselves, the entire body would produce one cell that would make another one of those bodies.
