That’s the like-to-post ratio.
If there is a high like-to-post ratio, it’s a deeper color.
If there is a low like-to-post ratio, it’s a lighter color.

The default color, the same for the buttons for your theme (e.g. yellow on Grey Amber, blue on Dark) indicates that there’s a completely unread reply there. What I’ve observed is that it can turn grey if new activity (replies) is present on a thread you were just viewing but left a moment ago, and as a result you didn’t see the new replies.

I noticed through this thread. I’d had times where I was reading the replies as they came up, but then I would leave Comment Frenzy just after a new reply (or two) was added, but before I could react and not close it. Afterwards, on the topic was the grey/silver notification indicator, at least for me.
